Men's
Central Jail was constructed in two phases. Phase one, a 585,150
square foot structure was constructed in 1963, and was designed
to house 3,322 inmates at a cost of 17 million dollars. Phase
two, completed in 1976, added 350,000 square feet at a cost
of 35 million dollars. This addition raised the jail capacity
to 5,118 inmates. Further interior design changes have increased
the capacity of Men's Central Jail to 6,800.

County's high risk, high security inmates, and it ranks as
the largest jail in the free world. The average annual operational
budget is 52 million dollars, with an annual inmate food budget
of 6 million dollars, and an annual inmate medical maintenance
cost of approximately 94 million dollars. The average housing
