WILLIE J. MILLER PROMOTED TO COMMANDER
Willie J. Miller, a 24-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Commander by Sheriff Lee Baca and was assigned to Field Operations Region II Headquarters. This region provides law enforcement services for several cities through local Sheriff's stations including Century, Compton, Marina Del Rey, West Hollywood, Carson, Lennox, and Lomita. This region also provides law enforcement services through the Transit Services Bureau and the Community College Bureau.
Commander Miller's career with the Sheriff's Department began in 1978. After graduating from the Training Academy as a Deputy Sheriff, she held assignments at Sybil Brand Institute for Women, Lynwood Station, and Sheriff's Information Bureau. Upon being promoted to Sergeant in 1987, Commander Miller worked at Lomita Station and as a Recruitment Sergeant at Recruit Training Bureau. When she was promoted to Lieutenant in 1991, she was assigned to Pitchess Detention Center's Ranch Facility, Century Station, and Safe Streets Bureau. As a Safe Streets Bureau Zone Lieutenant and Operations Lieutenant, she supervised the activities of Operation Safe Streets' gang investigators in the Norwalk, Lennox, and Carson areas; and also oversaw the Bureau's daily operations. Commander Miller was then promoted to the position of Captain in 2000 and placed in command of Safe Streets Bureau. \
Commander Miller received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Tougaloo College in Mississippi and a Master of Science Degree in Journalism from the University of Illinois. After college she left her native Mississippi, and worked in public relations for the California Museum of Science and Industry, as a law enforcement intern with the Los Angeles Police Department, and as a school security agent with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Commander Miller presently resides in Inglewood. Her son, Brandon Kyle, is a Freshman at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
In her spare time, Commander Miller enjoys traveling with her sisters, reading, attending live theater, and listening to jazz music. Commander Miller is a member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives; the editorial committee for the Reformed Church in America's national publication, "The Church Herald"; the Board of Directors for Catholic Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Los Angeles; and the Board of Deacons Park Hills Community Church.
