MICHAEL GROSSMAN PROMOTED TO COMMANDER

 

Michael Grossman, a 32-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was recently promoted to Commander by Sheriff Lee Baca and assigned to the Office of Homeland Security.

Commander Grossman joined the Department in 1973, and worked various assignments including the Hall of Justice Jail, Civic Center Security Unit and Industry Station. He was also a staff instructor at the Sheriff’s Academy.

In 1981 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and remained at the Sheriff’s Academy until his transfer to Carson Station. In 1984 he transferred to the Recruitment Unit until his promotion to Lieutenant in 1987. As a Lieutenant, he was assigned to the Pitchess Honor Rancho, Marina Del Rey Station, S.A.N.E. Bureau, Transit Services Bureau and Training Bureau. From 1998 - 2000, he was temporarily assigned to the United States Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice - Office of Science and Technology, in Washington, D.C., as the Director of the Technology Assistance Division. He later was assigned to the Technology Exploration Unit, Field Operations Region III, and the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation.

In 2001 he was promoted to Captain and assigned to the Emergency Operations Bureau, where he was responsible for overseeing the Emergency Management and Disaster Response for the 4000 square miles and 10 million residents of Los Angeles County.

Commander Grossman is a four-time recipient of the Sheriff’s Department’s Distinguished Service Award, an Exemplary Service Award, and the Employee Suggestion Award.

Commander Grossman received an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from East Los Angeles Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Los Angeles. He is currently earning his Master’s Degree in National Security Studies – Homeland Security and Defense, at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He will graduate in September 2005. Commander Grossman was a Technical Sergeant in the Air Force Reserve.

Commander Grossman resides in La Verne with his wife, Lois, and has a married daughter, Rachel, 26, who is an administrator with the Orange County School District. Commander Grossman enjoys auto detailing and light mechanics, cycling, and home improvement.
