IRMA BECERRA PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN
Irma Becerra, a 24-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Captain by Sheriff Lee Baca, and has assumed the command of Pico Rivera Station. Pico Rivera Station provides law enforcement services to the City of Pico Rivera and the unincorporated Whittier area.
Captain Becerra’s career with the Sheriff’s Department began in 1980, when she attended the Department’s Training Academy. After graduating as a Deputy Sheriff in April 1981, her assignments took her to Sybil Brand Institute for Women, Altadena and Malibu Stations, Court Services, SANE Bureau, Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau, and the Recruitment Unit. Promoted to Sergeant in June of 1997, she worked at the Hollywood Courthouse and County Courthouse before returning to Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau. Attaining the rank of Lieutenant in March of 2001, she was assigned to Pico Rivera Station and the North County Correctional Facility. She returned to Pico Rivera Station in December of 2002.
Captain Becerra holds
an Associate of Arts Degree in English from Los Angeles Mission College and
resides in
Valencia. She speaks English, Spanish and Italian
and is learning French. She has three adult children, Caroline, 28, who is
a student and works with a veterinary oncology group; Daniel, 34, works as
an assistant editor, visual effects at a post production company; and Salvador
Becerra Jr., 35, who is a sergeant for the Sheriff’s Department and is
assigned to the Lennox Station’s Gang Enforcement Team. She also has
a
daughter-in-law who is Vice President of a greeting card company, and two beautiful
granddaughters, Presley, 6, and Danee, 2.
In her spare time Captain Becerra enjoys classical music, painting oil on canvas, traveling, reading and gardening.
Captain Becerra has always found opportunity in adversity, proven by her outlook on life: “I was the oldest and shortest person in my academy class. No problem, that just meant I had to jump a little higher, run a little faster, and work a little harder. It’s been that way ever since.”
