SUSAN M. KOPPERUD PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN

 

Susan M. Kopperud, a 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, has been promoted to the rank of Captain by Sheriff Lee Baca, and assumed command of the Communications and Fleet Management Bureau. This Bureau is responsible for providing quality communications and vehicle equipment to the entire Department.

Captain Kopperud’s law enforcement career began on June 26, 1976 as a cadet in the Sheriff’s Academy. Upon graduation, she served as a Deputy at Sybil Brand Institute for Women, then moved on to patrol assignments at Firestone Station and Industry Station before transferring to Juvenile Investigations Bureau as a Detective. She promoted to Sergeant in 1990 and was assigned to Firestone Station then transferred to Professional Standards and Training Division where she worked for Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau, and the Koltz Review Investigative Team. In 1996 she was promoted to Lieutenant and returned to Sybil Brand Institute before serving as a Watch Commander at Pico Rivera Station. She also worked Commercial Crimes Bureau, Career Development Bureau, and the Family Crimes Bureau. Her most recent assignment was at Narcotics Bureau.

Captain Kopperud’s education includes an Associate of Arts Degree in General Education from Harbor Junior College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration from the University of La Verne, and a Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. Additionally, she received her California State Teaching Credential in 1988.

Captain Kopperud was born in Washington D.C. and now resides in Alta Loma with her husband, Allen, of 25 years. She has three children: Timothy, Ronald, and Kevin. She enjoys sports, traveling and reading good books. Captain Kopperud graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy in 1995 and became the California Chapter President for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy Associates in 2004. Captain Kopperud’s favorite quote is by Salman Rushdie, “Our lives teach us who we are.”
