RICHARD J. BARRANTES PROMOTED TO COMMANDER

Richard J. Barrantes, a 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Commander by Sheriff Lee Baca, and assumed command of the Department's Correctional Services Division, overseeing the Inmate Reception Center and Medical Services Bureau.

Commander Barrantes joined the Sheriff's Department in 1974, graduating from the Department's Training Academy as a Deputy Sheriff. As a deputy sheriff, Commander Barrantes served at the Men's Central Jail, Special Investigations Bureau, Lakewood Station and Data Systems Bureau. In 1985, he was promoted to Sergeant and took on assignments at Temple Station, Custody Division Headquarters, and Field Operations Region I Headquarters, where he served as the Chief's Aide. Following his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant in 1990, Commander Barrantes was assigned to the Inmate Reception Center and followed by Temple Station, where he served as the Operations Lieutenant and community liaison. In 1999, Commander Barrantes was promoted to Captain and became the Unit Commander at Pitchess Detention Center's - South Facility, the Inmate Reception Center and most recently the Medical Services Bureau.

Commander Barrantes holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. He resides in Whittier with his wife, Nora. His daughter, Deanna, 22, is a student and works part-time. Commander Barrantes is a board member and current Treasurer of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Athletic Association (LASAA), and has been a member of the Department's soccer team and a participant in the California Police and Fire Games since 1978. He also enjoys playing racquetball, jogging, and analyzing possible investment opportunities in the stock market.
