ROD PENNER PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN

Rod Penner, a 24-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Captain by Sheriff Lee Baca and assigned to Correctional Services Division, Medical Services Bureau. He will be leading nearly 800 doctors, nurses and other medical staff charged with the medical care and treatment of up to 20,000 county jail inmates, housed in the County's eight correctional facilities.

Captain Penner's career with the Sheriff's Department began in 1979, as a Deputy Sheriff Trainee. After graduating as a Deputy Sheriff, he was assigned to the Men's Central Jail and went on to his first patrol assignment at Lakewood Sheriff's Station. Following a promotion to Sergeant and transfer to Lynwood Station in 1986, he also served at the North County Correctional Facility and in the administrative offices of Custody Division. Captain Penner promoted to Lieutenant in 1991 and was assigned to the Mira Loma Facility. His other assignments as a lieutenant took him to the Pitchess Detention Center, South Facility, Lancaster Station, the Inmate Reception Center, and Custody Division's Support Services Unit.

Captain Penner holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and Economics from Point Loma College. He resides in Northern Los Angeles County with his wife of 25 years, Donna. They have two daughters, Cari, 21, a college student and Kelli, 16, now attending high school. Most of Captain Penner's leisure time interests take him outdoors to enjoy running, softball, golfing, and fishing.
