JAMES B. CURTIS PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN
James B. Curtis, a 32-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, has been promoted to the rank of Captain by Sheriff Lee Baca, and has assumed command of the San Dimas Station. San Dimas Station provides police services to the residents who work and reside in the incorporated city of San Dimas, as well as the unincorporated areas of Azusa, Claremont, Covina, Glendora, La Verne, Pomona, and a 148-square-mile portion of the Angeles National Forest.
Captain Curtis’ law enforcement career began on February 28, 1972, when he worked “off-the-street” at the Wayside Honor Ranch Facility (now the Pitchess Detention Center). He attended and completed the Department’s Training Academy in the summer of that same year. Upon graduation, he returned to the Ranch Facility, before transferring to West Hollywood Station in June of 1975. Beginning in July of 1976, Captain Curtis served as a field training officer at the Santa Clarita Valley Station, and eventually earned a detective position.
Promoted to Sergeant in November of 1987, he returned to West Hollywood Station, and later returned to the Santa Clarita Valley Station. He accepted a position as an investigator at the Detective Division Headquarters in September of 1989. In November of 1993, he promoted to Lieutenant and served as Watch Commander at the Pitchess Detention Center-East Facility and the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic. In November of 1996, he transferred to the West Hollywood Station where he worked as a Watch Commander and later as the Detective Bureau Lieutenant. In August of 1998, he transferred to Homicide Bureau, where he worked as a Team Lieutenant and then as the Operations Lieutenant, until his recent promotion.
Captain Curtis holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Public Administration from Los Angeles Valley College. He resides in Santa Clarita with his wife, Patti, of 30 years. He has four adult children and one grandchild. Captain Curtis enjoys spending time with his granddaughter, watching his son’s college baseball games, and riding motorcycles.
