STEPHEN B. JOHNSON PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN
Stephen B. Johnson, a 26-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, has been promoted to the rank of Captain by Sheriff Lee Baca and assigned to the Narcotics Bureau.
Captain Johnson started his law enforcement career in 1975 as a reserve police officer for the city of Glendale, graduating from reserve class #40 at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department academy. In 1977, he was hired as a full-time deputy sheriff, and returned to the Sheriff's academy to complete his training in academy class #187.
As a deputy, Captain Johnson was assigned to the Men's Central Jail, Malibu/Lost Hills Station, and West Hollywood Station, where he worked as a field training officer. Later, he was assigned to the Sheriff's training academy as a staff instructor, training new recruits. He also represented the Department in Sacramento at numerous training curriculum development committees with the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Since 1985, Captain Johnson has continued to be a guest lecturer at the Sheriff's academy teaching topics ranging from officer survival to criminal investigations.
In 1985, Captain Johnson promoted to Sergeant. As a sergeant, he worked at Lennox Station and the Internal Affairs Bureau. While at Internal Affairs Bureau, he worked as an investigator assigned exclusively to officer-involved shootings and use of force cases.
In 1993, Captain Johnson was promoted to lieutenant. As a lieutenant, he worked at the Pitchess Detention Center's South Facility, West Hollywood Station, Marina del Rey Station, Narcotics Bureau, and the Office of the Assistant Sheriff. While assigned at the West Hollywood Station, he worked as a watch commander and service area lieutenant for the "Sunset Strip," acting as the Department liaison to the various hotels, nightclubs, and restaurants. At the Narcotics Bureau, he worked as a zone lieutenant and operations lieutenant, serving as second in command, overseeing 195 personnel and a $21 million operating budget. He also worked in the Office of the Assistant Sheriff serving as an aide to Assistant Sheriff Larry L. Waldie. While assigned there, he chaired numerous Departmental committees dealing with strategic planning and policy development.
Captain Johnson is a graduate of the Command College, class #31. The college is a futures oriented leadership institute for California Police Chief candidates, sponsored by the California Department of Justice. He maintains his association with the Command College by mentoring candidates currently enrolled in the program.
Captain Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Los Angeles, and an Associate of Arts Degree in Political Science from Glendale College. He also possesses a State of California Lifetime Community College Instructor Credential. Captain Johnson is furthering his studies as a Master's candidate at the California State University, Long Beach, majoring in Emergency Management.
Captain Johnson serves as a guest lecturer, consultant, and curriculum advisor at the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI), a training institute for public safety personnel administered by the State of California, Office of Emergency Services. Since 1986, he has been a guest presenter to more than 9,000 public safety personnel from throughout California.
Captain Johnson is a member of the California Peace Officer's Association (CPOA), California Narcotics Officers Association (CNOA), and the Command College Alumni Association.
Captain Johnson resides in Los Angeles County with his wife Pamela, a 24-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who is a deputy assigned to the Pre-employment unit. Together, they have three children, Robert, Lisa, and Amy, and one grandson, Gregory Stephen.
