MARVIN O. CAVANAUGH PROMOTED TO CHIEF
Marvin O. Cavanaugh, a 32-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Chief by Sheriff Lee Baca. He will assume command responsibilities for patrol operations in Field Operations Region III. In this new position he will oversee the operations of Avalon, Cerritos, City of Industry, Lakewood, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, San Dimas and Walnut/Diamond Bar Stations. These eight patrol stations and the county area serve a population of 1.2 million residents, with 16 contract cities. There are over 1400 personnel in Region III, with an annual budget in excess of $135 million.
Chief Cavanaugh's career with the Sheriff's Department began in 1970 when he became a Reserve Deputy and assigned to Industry Station. He subsequently attended the Sheriff's Academy the following year to become a full-time Deputy Sheriff. After graduating from the Academy, he was assigned to Firestone Station and then the Sheriff's Information Bureau. Upon his promotion to Sergeant in 1980, Chief Cavanaugh worked at Men's Central Jail before transferring to Norwalk Station in 1982. When he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1986, he worked at the Hall of Justice Jail, Industry Station, and Lakewood Station. While assigned to Lakewood Station, he helped implement the Department's plan for law enforcement services in the northern and eastern sections of the City of Long Beach, when the city was critically short of police officers and requested the Departments assistance. He later became the Operations Lieutenant at Lakewood Station and, in 1996, promoted to Captain of Lakewood Station. He spent almost eight years of his career working with the communities served by Lakewood Station, and, in his new position as a Division Chief, he will continue to do so. As a former resident of more than 20 years in the eastern San Gabriel Valley, he is looking forward to continuing his service to some very familiar communities.
Chief Cavanaugh resides in Chino Hills with his wife of 37 years, Linda. He has two adult children, Jeff, 36, who is a Sergeant assigned to San Dimas Station, and Jennifer, 32, a Custody Assistant assigned to the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic. In his spare time, Chief Cavanaugh enjoys water skiing, fishing, reading, and spoiling his seven grandchildren.
