ROBERTA A. ABNER PROMOTED TO COMMANDER
Roberta A. Abner, a 23-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was recently promoted to the rank of Commander by Sheriff Lee Baca, and was assigned to the Office of the Sheriff. In this new position she will oversee the operations of the Sheriff's Office, Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau, and the Sheriff's Youth Foundation.
Commander Abner's career with the Sheriff's Department began in 1979. After graduating from the Training Academy as a Deputy Sheriff, she held assignments at Sybil Brand Institute for Women, West Hollywood Station, and Recruit Training Bureau. Upon being promoted to Sergeant in 1987, Commander Abner worked in a patrol assignment, as an investigator at Internal Affairs Bureau, and as the Commander's Aide at Professional Standards and Training Division. When she was promoted to Lieutenant in 1991, she worked at Pitchess Detention Center's East Facility, West Hollywood Station, Scientific Services Bureau, Internal Affairs Bureau, and Century Station. Upon her promotion to Captain in 1999, she oversaw the operations at Court Services East Bureau, and eventually assumed command of Temple Station, which serves the cities of Temple City, Rosemead, Duarte, South El Monte and Bradbury, and the unincorporated areas of Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte, North San Gabriel, East Pasadena and South San Gabriel.
Commander Abner received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from California State University, Los Angeles. She resides in Ventura County with her husband, Phil, a Lieutenant at Lost Hills Station. They have two children, Sean, 19, a college student, and Danielle, 17, a high school student. In her spare time, Commander Abner enjoys running, reading, water skiing, camping, golfing and competing in Department athletic events.
