County COPS/"High Impact Team"

During 1997, Carson Station fielded a total of eight County COPS deputies, plus a Community Relations deputy, who are funded by a Federal Grant to address "quality of life" issues in the unincorporated areas. The County COPS deputies are deployed into a six person "High Impact" Team and a two person Special Assignment Team.

The "High Impact" Team targets the unincorporated areas of West Compton, Gardena, Torrance and Rancho Dominguez. The Special Assignment Team maintains the improved quality of life issues and responds to ongoing problems in all of the unincorporated communities. The Community Relations deputy works very closely with the County COPS Teams to organize Neighborhood Watch programs, facilitate the Community Advisory Committee, and maintain liaison with community based service organizations.

Parenting Program Project

The Carson Parent Project Program is comprised of two curricula: The first is the Parent Project Classes, which address parenting techniques for parents of strong willed teens. Second is the Teen Project Classes, which assist teens-at-risk to learn positive decision making skills. The Carson Parent and Teen Project Program has served over 350 families. This program has made a positive impact on the quality of life for families with strong willed teens who had their first encounter with the juvenile justice system.

Volunteers on Patrol

Volunteers on Patrol function as extra eyes and ears for the Department. This program consists of citizen volunteers who observe and report suspicious activity, criminal activity, safety hazards, fire and medical emergencies. Volunteers on Patrol are selected after completing our Community Academy and then completing eight additional weeks of training.
