Explorers:

The Explorer program is a long-standing tradition in law enforcement. This program gives the youth an opportunity to become involved in learning the various aspects of law enforcement, and to be mentored by professionals who are committed to our community. Currently, the Compton Explorer program has 16 participants, ranging in age from 14-19 years old. Each participant in the Sheriff's Explorer program must maintain above average grades, have good attendance in school, and demonstrate excellent citizenship skills.

The Explorers at Compton Station volunteer their time and effort to assist the city with various duties such as traffic control at large events, community cleanups, and assisting deputy personnel with assignments at the station. The Explorer program. Anyone interested in becoming an Explorer can call the Compton Explorer Coordinator at (310) 605-6579.

The Explorers compliment our other youth programs, such as the Youth Activities League, in an on-going effort to provide direction and assistance to the youth of our community.

A part of our program is allowing our Explorers to compete with other Explorer Posts from different parts of the country in "tactical competitions." Our Explorers have trained numerous hours in the various aspects of police tactics and have traveled to Chandler, Arizona, and Santa Clarita, California, to challenge other police and sheriff's department's explorers in these events. We are very proud of our Explorers, as they have exemplified good sportsmanship and professionalism, bringing home several awards on the behalf of the City of Compton and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Although directed toward an introduction to law enforcement, Explorers learn many other valuable skills, such as basic First Aid, communications, leadership, teamwork, and the importance of community service.

After acceptance into the program, initial training for new Deputy Explorers, takes place at one of the Sheriff's Explorer Academies. There are four: Whittier, Valencia, Antelope Valley, and South Los Angeles. The Explorer Academy consists of about 184 hours of instruction during 18 weeks of training on Saturdays. This year the Compton Station Explorer post graduated fifteen Explores who have contributed countless hours of service to the community, and to the Explorer Program.

Reserve Deputies:

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs are utilized to supplement the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department law enforcement manpower. Like Full-time Deputies, Reserve Deputies are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. In most cases, Reserves are assigned to the same duties as Full-time Deputies. Since Reserve Deputies have the same powers of arrest as Full-time Deputies they are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical, and psychological standards as Full-time Deputies.

Reserve Deputies Sheriff's enjoy the challenge and excitement offered by law enforcement, as well as the satisfaction of providing a worthwhile community service. The Reserve Deputies also supplement the regular operations of the Sheriff's Department by working in their choice of Uniform Reserve Patrol, Mounted Posse, and Search and Rescue. Reserve Deputies volunteer 20 hours per month of their time. Currently we have one active Reserve Deputy and have two in the Sheriff's Reserve Academy.
