Explorers:
Deputy Explorers are young individuals interested in
pursuing a career in law enforcement. The Cerritos Station
Explorer Post consist of 13 young men and women who are
dedicated and trained to assist in non-hazardous duties which
include; patrol ride-alongs, public fingerprinting, report
writing, search missions, competitions and several other
support type duties. Explorers are between the ages of 15 and
21 years of age. They must attain at least a "C" average or
better in school and must be of good moral character.
After meeting the basic requirements, Deputy Explorers
attend a training academy at one of the counties four sites.
The academy consists of approximately 180 hours of instruction
over a period of 18 weeks on Saturdays. They are taught
subjects in police procedures, weaponless defense, criminal
law and narcotics training. Deputy Explorer trainees also
undergo drill and physical training in addition to their
classroom work.
Being an Cerritos Explorer for the Los Angeles County
Sheriff’s Department provides the early experience in becoming
a full time Deputy Sheriff. Anyone interested in becoming an

Reserve Deputies:
Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s assigned to Cerritos Station are
part-time volunteer law enforcement officers. They complete
state mandated training and work assignments on weekends and
as their regular jobs permit. Reserve Deputies enjoy the
challenge and excitement offered by law enforcement, as well
as the satisfaction of providing a worthwhile community
service to the city of Cerritos. Reserve Deputies are
dedicated and have the peace officer powers as full time
deputies. Their duties include patrol, crime investigations,
court testimony and various community relation appearances.
Reserve Deputies are here to augment and assist the
sheriff’s department/city in maintaining the needed resources
to ensure a safe community. The Reserves are compensated $1.00
a year. Each Reserve is expected to work an average of 20
hours per month which include monthly meetings, community
events as well as patrol duties. All Reserve Deputies are
issued a badge, identification card, handgun, uniform and most
other necessary equipment. They qualify for shooting bonus pay
and some paid special event assignments are available.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Cerritos residents contribute to the safety of the community
by serving as volunteers at the Cerritos Sheriff's
Station/Community Safety Center. Volunteers perform a number
of non-hazardous duties within the facility, including filing
reports, entering computer data, providing services at the
front counter and assisting Station personnel with a variety
of public-safety related tasks.
Volunteer application forms are available in the Community
Safety Division at the Cerritos Sheriff's Station. All
applicants will undergo a routine limited background
investigation, including a fingerprint search. Volunteers must
be at least 18 and in reasonably good health.
