STATION
4
Located at 12335
Civic Center Dr. (formerly Leffingwell Rd.), Norwalk was the
fourth station established by the Sheriff's Department. In
its early days, Norwalk Station provided all law enforcement
services for a vast area stretching from the San Gabriel Mountains
to the Pacific Ocean. The station handled areas now served
by Industry, Lakewood, Pico Rivera, San Dimas and Temple City
Stations and the independent cities of Downey, Long Beach,
Signal Hill, South Gate, West Covina and Whittier. The first
contract city (Lakewood) was originally patrolled by the station
prior to construction of Lakewod Station.
To
date, there have been three separate Norwalk Sheriff's Stations.
The first station (pictured below), was constructed in 1926
and located on the northwest corner of San Antonio Dr. and
Front St. in the city of Norwalk. This site is now occupied
by the GTE phone building.

The
second station (pictured below), opened in 1948 and was located
on the northeast corner of Firestone Bl. and Pioneer Bl. in
the city of Norwalk. During the period of time this station
was in operation, two significant events occurred. On February
1, 1958, wreckage from a mid-air military plane crash caused
a temporary disruption of service from this station. In 1960,
with the incorporation of the city of La Mirada, the Norwalk
Station began to provide law enforcement services to that
community. This station was one-third the size of the present
station.

The
third and current Norwalk Sheriff's Station (pictured below),
broke ground in July 1970, and has been in operation since
early June of 1972. It currently serves the contract cities
of Norwalk and La Mirada, and the unincorporated county area
of South Whittier.

The
Whittier County Substation was dedicated on June 26, 1996,
to the late Deputy Tom Ctibor. Tom ws instrumental in organizing
the Whittier County Sheriff's Community Advisory Council.

The
La Mirada Community Sheriff's Station was dedicated on March
17, 2001. The new facility allows greater public access to
Sheriff's Department services such as report retrieval, Megan's
Law information and fingerprinting. La Mirada patrol deputies
and detectives work from the station and a nearby Public Safety
Annex Building to service the area, only leaving La Mirada
to book evidence and prisoners at Norwalk Regional Station.
The La Mirada Community Sheriff's Station serves as the primary
base of operations for public safety team members from the
City of La Mirada, the Sheriff's Department, the District
Attorney's Office, Adult Probation Department and Juvenile
Probation Department. Situated in the La Mirada Civic Center
area, the station provides excellent accessibility to neighborhood
residents and businesses.

Norwalk
Station is one of the Department's busiest and with the addition
of the substations, largest facilities. In addition, it has
a very active Reserve Unit and a dedicated Explorer Post.
